How to make a batik design?

Batik making dates back to over a millennium ago but early instances of its craft can be found in Middle East, China, India and ancient Egypt.

Today, batik has been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage craft.

How is a batik design created?

1. Draw design patterns on cotton cloth.
2. Melt some wax and use a professional tool to apply it to the areas of the fabric where you don't want the dye to penetrate.
3. Immerse the fabric in a natural plant dye bath for a certain period of time, depending on the desired intensity of the color.
4. Boil the fabric to remove the wax.
5. Repeat the process from 2 if you want to add additional colors or designs.
6. Rinse the fabric in cold water.
7. Hang the fabric to dry.

👍 The wax cracks during handling, the cracks in the wax allow the dye to reach the fabric creating the unique batik effect. It's called a "ice crackling". "ice crackling" is considered to be a hallmark of traditional batik techniques. People often see the "ice crackling" as an important part of its beauty and appeal.

Just like with all hand-drawn and hand-dyed fabric, each piece is one-of-a-kind.
